Where this format came from
The format started as a stock photograph of a man turning to look at a passing woman while his partner reacts with disbelief. Labelled with three things — a loyal current option, a person, and a shiny new distraction — it became the standard diagram for shifting loyalty: to technologies, hobbies, snacks and side projects. Our original layout keeps the three-position structure with three emoji figures and three label zones across the top.
How to use it well
- Labels should be nouns or short noun phrases — readers map them to the figures instantly.
- The middle label is usually ‘me’ or a group (‘our team’, ‘developers’); the comedy is recognition.
- Make the distraction genuinely tempting, or the current thing absurdly neglected — exaggerate one side.
Example captions
- Distraction: “A brand-new side project” — Person: “Me” — Current: “The side project from last month”
- Distraction: “One more episode” — Person: “Me at 1am” — Current: “Sleep”
- Distracted label set: “New framework / Our roadmap / The stable stack”
